Thoroughbred insurance

We have proudly supported the New Zealand racing industry for over 20 years. When you talk to us, you can be assured that we know insurance as well as we know thoroughbreds and racing.

We offer you the most comprehensive bloodstock insurance for your thoroughbreds. Our specialist insurance brokers know all about insuring racehorses. With years of experience and a passion for the thoroughbred racing industry, they offer support and advice that goes beyond a standard insurance policy.

Thoroughbred insurance cover

Crombie Lockwood can provide the right policy for both your racehorses and breeding stock. For those that have numerous horses, we can offer stable discounts.

What does thoroughbred insurance cover?

We'll look after your broodmares, foals, stallions or yearlings. We provide insurance for your racehorses from when they start out training for the track until their retirement. We have cover available for horses aged from 30 days up to and including 13 years of age. Specialised cover can also be arranged for horses over 14 years of age on application.

SOLUTIONS AND OPTIONS FOR THOROUGHBRED COVER
Basic mortality cover
  • Risks of mortality cover includes death by accident, sickness or disease and also euthanasia on humane grounds.
  • Theft: limited cover for theft as per policy wording.
  • Insurance cover within Australasia including transits within and between New Zealand and Australia. These limits can be extended to include other countries on application.

Fall of hammer cover

Once the gavel has fallen at an auction, as the successful bidder, all risks to the horse immediately transfer from the seller to the buyer. There are many hazards that can endanger your horse between purchase and its safe arrival home. We encourage thoroughbred owners to contact us and arrange for ‘fall of the hammer’ coverage, prior to attending sales. Notify us prior to the sale.

Foetus insurance

We can provide foetus Insurance for the unborn foal from 42 days after last service date to 30 days after birth. Prospective foal Insurance provides coverage in the event of:

  •  The mare losing the pregnancy
  • The foal being born dead
  • The foal is born live but fails to survive the period to the expiry date of the policy
  • The foal not reaching term due to death of the mare.

Documentation requirements

  • Bloodstock proposal and health declaration (PDF,141KB).
  • Vet certificate confirming the mare is pregnant on or after inception date. The certificate must also confirm that the mare is in good health, provide 3 scan dates and state that there are no obvious reasons why she would not carry the foetus full term. Confirmation that there is a singleton foetus is also required.

Foal insurance

Foals can be insured from 24 hours of age and up to 89 days as long as sum insured does not exceed $99,999NZD.

Documentation requirements:

Stallion insurance

We provide permanent disability cover for accident, sickness or disease. If your stallion becomes totally and permanently infertile due to an accident, sickness or disease, you will be indemnified 100% for the sum insured, providing the sum insured reflects the fair market value at the time of loss.

Documentation requirements:

Congenital infertility Insurance

We offer cover on first year stallions entering the breeding shed. This covers first season sires against infertility due to congenital reasons and not a result of accident, sickness or disease.
